Checking My Privileges

8:42 AM

Today is Thursday, the third week of community quarantine and my life has been very normal as usual but the sad part is not for everyone. Some are privileged, some are not, we do not know about tomorrow and I'll just put it that way.

I am writing this journal as I am reflecting in our daily battle with this pandemic. Few days ago, I stumbled a post from facebook which caught my attention about checking your privileges. It made me realize the reality of that post, that sometimes I neglect to see the privilege that is within me. The food that I eat and set aside for the coming days is a privilege. The clean water I drink is a privilege. The family I have is a privilege. The shelter I live is a privilege. The electricity that we have is a privilege. The facemasks and rubbing alcohol we use is a privilege. I am writing this journal because I am privileged to have internet access.
Some people do not have all of these and that is the reality.
Initially, I felt guilty and selfish that why do I need someone to tell me to check my privileges? It may sound as if I do not deserve and I felt like it was too insensitive but I realized that we are facing a global crisis today. What I really meant for this is to check my privileges and think of something I can be of help for those who doesn't have. After all we are but just humans and being privileged does not always mean to have rich resources and I know I can do something even the least thing I can do.
The government is not prepared obviously, our health care is limited, people are getting hungry and hungrier every day. The worst thing could happen is that violence and crime may arise.

What I can do, as I call myself privileged?
  1. I need to pray- As a Christian, I believe with the sovereignty of GOD. I believe with the promises and instruction He gave us, these alone make me not to hesitate to pray ALWAYS. I need to Pray for our frontliners, pray those in authority, pray for the people. And thank God for my privileges.
  2. Donate -Donating does not always mean I'll give money or goods, it can also be in the form of service, even the simplest thing I could give or render could be an answered prayer of others.
  3. Connect-I have friends who are frontliners, giving them words or encouragement, I know makes a difference. Connect with relatives, friends, relatives and church.
  4. Stay home- We have a home, we have enough food so far , and that is a blessing already, that's why as much as possible I'll stay home because I wanna help flattening the curve.
  5. Be a better Social Media User- I am not against to opinions and views, me myself has something to say also but I must say I needed to be a more responsible social media user, I should not be mean to a point that it dehumanises others, i know I can handle it in a better way.At the end of the day I still believe that even how perversive this world we live in, everyone has its soft spot, I can still do good to others and I know I can do better. So help me GOD
(Now I challenge you to check your privileges, reflect and pray about it)
